TIPS TO A HEALTHY AND CLEAN MOUTH

Oral health instruction
The mouth they say is the gateway to the body, whatever you take in today must pass through the mouth. The health of the mouth determines the health of the whole body. There are diseases in the body that developed as a result of poor oral hygiene.
                                             STEPS
1.      Proper teeth brushing: The teeth are meant to be brushed twice daily, at night after dinner and in the morning after breakfast. I know many will find it very odd to eat in the morning before brushing; this is so because higher percentage of the people do brush first thing the morning before eating there breakfast. But the truth is that since you brushed before going to bed ,your mouth will still be fresh when you wake up in the morning. All you have to do is rinse your mouth in the morning then brush after breakfast.
2.      Dental flossing: Toothpick is the material generally used to remove food particles that is tuck in between the teeth, but is very very wrong. The ideal material to be used is the dental floss. When you use the toothpick it damages your gum tissues due to the pointed tips and may sometimes cause the gum to bleed which may lead to gum recession, thereby exposing the root of the teeth. Later on this blog i will write on flossing. Visit a well-equipped pharmacy or any dental clinic for your dental floss.
3.      Avoid sugary foods: Always try to avoid sugary substance and food intake such as sweet, mineral, chocolate etc. But in case your an addict to sugary food intake, always try to brush your teeth properly after intake. If you are not at home to brush after intake, just rinse your mouth properly with water. The reason for this is that all this sugary substances tend to stick on the teeth surface, and when normal bacteria in the mouth that is not meant to be harmful comes in contact with it, it forms dental acid that dissolves the teeth surface there by creating a hole on the teeth. With time the hole deepens and cause pains on the tooth/teeth.
4.      Eat fruits after meal: when you take fruits like orange, mango etc that has fiber in them, when the fiber gets in between the teeth it naturally helps to clean the spaces in between the and as well help remove food particles that might have hidden there. Water melon, apple etc are cleansing fruits, the much juice in them help was out food patches on the teeth surface.

5.      Scaling and polishing: Visit a good dental clinic for scaling and polishing of the teeth every 6 months i.e twice daily. This will help keep the teeth in good form and quality.

                                  EFFECTS OF POOR ORAL PRACTICE
HALITOSIS{MOUTH ODOR}
Mouth dour also known as halitosis or bad breath is a very common oral issue most people encounter, some are very much aware they have it while some are not aware. Halitosis is a symptom in which a noticeably unpleasant smell is present on ones exhaled breath during communication. I am going to discuss the causes of mouth odor then how to prevent it, because for a problem to be completely solved the cause must be known.
CAUSES; they are many causes of mouth odor
·         Tongue; the most common area mouth odor develop is the tongue, this is because the bacteria in the the tongue produce malodorous compounds and fatty acid. Large amount of natural bacteria are found on the inner left and right hand side of the tongue, that area is dry and poorly cleaned during brushing and they are as well not disturbed by the activities in the mouth. When these bacteria stay there with time combined with food debris they decompose the food debris and cause bad breath.
·      Gum; bacteria seems to stay on the natural depressions or spaces between the gum and the teeth. There end product is smelly thereby producing bad smell that leads to halitosis(bad me with more accumulation and actions of bacteria a hard substance is formed there called dental calculus which may lead to bad  breath.
·         Dental decay (caries);  Some individuals have natural deep chewing surface of the teeth, this tends to retain sticky food substances and with time they decompose and starts smelling. Deep chewing surface can retain sugary substance and when normal unharmful bacteria feeds on them they become harmful by producing acid that dissolves the tooth surface.
·         Fresh dental extraction socket; If the space from which a tooth is being removed fro is not properly taken care of,bacteria will accumulate with the blood cloth and cause infection to set in,which will eventually lead to mouth odour.
·         Artificial teeth/tooth(denture); When a denture is not properly taken care of by not brushing the denture separately with hard toothbrush everyday, and placing the denture in water before going to bed at night. Mouth odour tends to set in.
·         Food stuff; food stuffs like onion, garlic, ginger ,cabbage etc tend to stimulate bad breath.
·         Smoking; smoking leads to periodontal diseases which cause the formation of dip space between the teeth and the gum, when food particles get in there and stay with time,it decays and cause mouth odour.
·         Medication ; some medications can cause dry mouth(xerostomia) which will lead to increase microbial activities there by resulting to mouth odour.

Management
1        1.    Cleaning the tongue surface  twice daily is the most effective way to keep bad breath in control;               that can be achieved using a tooth brush or a tongue cleaner device.
2         2.    chewing gum: Since dry-mouth can increase bacterial buildup and cause or worsen bad breath,           chewing sugarless gum can help with the production of saliva, and thereby help to reduce bad               breath. Chewing may help particularly when the mouth is dry, or when one cannot perform oral               hygiene procedures after meals (especially those meals rich in protein). This aids in provision of             saliva, which washes away oral bacteria, has antibacterial properties and promotes mechanical               activity which helps cleanse the mouth. Some chewing gums contain special anti-odour                            ingredients.
3. Gargling  right before bedtime with an effective mouthwash.Several types of commercial mouthwashes have been shown to reduce malodor for hours in . Mouthwashes may contain active ingredients that are inactivated by the soap present in most toothpastes. Thus it is recommended to refrain from using mouthwash directly after toothbrushing with paste

4.   Maintaining proper oral hygiene including daily tongue cleaning, brushing, flossing, and periodic visits to dentists and hygienists. Flossing is particularly important in removing rotting food debris and bacterial plaque from between the teeth, especially at the gumline. Dentures should be properly cleaned and soaked overnight in antibacterial solution (unless otherwise advised by one's dentist).

5. For persons with dip chewing surfaces of the teeth that can retain food particles which may lead to dental caries as mentioned above, should visit a dental therapist for fissure sealant application. Fissure sealant is a jelly like substance applied on the chewing surfaces of the teeth(premolars and molars), to fill up the deep pits on the chewing surface of the teeth, thereby reducing the risk of dental caries.

BAD ORAL HABITS AND PRACTICES.
1. Using the teeth to open drink corks which may lead to cracking of the teeth. Using the teeth to pull nail out from woods.
2. Grinding and gnashing of the teeth(Bruxism). This leads to wearing away of teeth surfaces thereby exposing the dentin(middle layer of a tooth) which will lead to teeth sensitivity (shocking sensation on the teeth when food or water is taken)
3.  Thumb or tongue sucking by kids should be prevented by the parents by providing mouth guide or thumb thorn(a device with rough surfaces placed on the thumb usually sucked by the kid, which will irritate the kid where sucking of the thumb is attempted). Thumb or tongue sucking will lead to malocclusion(abnormal protrusion of the anterior teeth thereby making it almost impossible for the mouth to be properly  closed).
4. Use of hard tooth brush. People think it's the hard tooth brush that cleans the teeth properly, hard tooth brush wears away the surface of your tooth thereby leading to tooth sensitivity(shock). This is why 15 to 20mins after brushing the teeth, you notice some white substances on your lips while talk, that's your tooth surface wearing odd. Hard tooth brushes is meant to be used on dentures(artificial tooth). An adult is meant to use medium tooth brush and kids soft tooth brush.
